20 Lessons from my 30th Year

I love a good self reflection. With my 31st birthday approaching next week, I wanted to share some reflections of lessons I really ‘practiced’ this past year. haha These are in no particular order and have to do with all areas of life.

1. Saying no does not make you a bad person. I’ve really exercised my ability to say no and honor my best interests.

2. Being one of the last of your friend group to get married is amazing. Having so many bridesmaids who have already planned weddings (or been in multiple) is a blessing and so helpful.

3. Being engaged is one of the most magical times of life. Prepare to giggle a lot.

4. Joining a challenge that seems really hard (i.e. the BIPOC author only reading challenge for a year), is a great sign that it’s something you need to try. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

5. I am so grateful for my body’s ability to move. I cannot imagine my mental health story without the ability to use cycling and running as a means of therapy.

6. Talk less and listen more.

7. I feel my best when I get to bed early and read before falling asleep. Same goes for waking up early to spend time alone reading.

8. Planning a wedding is harder than it looks and can bring up a lot of past emotions you didn’t know you needed to work through. It’s also the most fun I’ve ever had planning the day I get to marry my best friend. (aka SO WORTH IT).

9. The more nieces and nephews I am blessed with, the better life gets. If my heart can grow this much from nieces and nephews, I can’t imagine what having children feels like.

10. You don’t have to physically give birth to be a mother. You can mother your friends, your family, others’ children.

11. I love wearing a mask at the grocery store so I can be sly and get and out quickly without seeing anyone I know.

12. I also love wearing a mask for moments when I’m doing makeup and don’t have to worry if people can smell my coffee breath.

13. Sourdough bread making isn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be.

14. Writing a cookbook is still hard, but we’re almost there!

15. Life is truly lived in the little moments. With each year I appreciate the tiny details more, as they are responsible for so much of life’s daily joy.

16. Being the bride after all of these years of working in the bridal industry, is a weird feeling. It’s ok if you don’t feel super bridal. Doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be a bride, or won’t enjoy it. It just might take longer for you to have it sink in. Plus, it’s about the marriage, not just the wedding day!

17. Turning 30 was absolutely amazing. If you are nearing it, embrace it. It’s exponentially better than your 20’s haha (and my 20’s were awesome)!

18. While I never would have wished the pandemic on anyone, I am grateful that it confirmed what I already knew…I can spend every second with only Mikey and still miss him the minute he walks out that front door.

19. Setting a realistic wedding budget is CRUCIAL. I cannot imagine this process without my budget.

20. You do not have to work every second of every day, to have a successful small business. Burnout is real and resting is great. Also work life balance is something you are continually striving for, so don’t be so hard on yourself if it feels like you haven’t mastered it. Life and businesses have seasons.

See you on the other side when I’m 31!!!

Andrea

Skincare for Spring

Welcome back! We haven’t talked about skincare in a little while, so I figured this would be a great requested topic to start off May with! Today I’m sharing some tips to consider while adjusting to the new season. Obviously, this will depend on what the season change means for your specific location, so take that into account as well.

  1. SPF:

Did you really think I wasn’t going to start this post off talking about SPF? haha While it’s important to wear it all year round, yes even in the winter…I wanted to start by reminding you that it’s very important to wear an SPF that is separate from your moisturizers and makeup, during the warmer months. ALSO, say it with me….REAPPLICATION! Often times we can be really great at applying it at the start of the day, but reapplying is key to staying protected. My favorite SPF for awhile has been this one by Amavara.

  2. Hyperpigmentation:

If you dealt with some post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from recent maskne (don’t worry, so many of us did), it’s important that you protect yourself in the sun. Generally, it is pretty easy to fade post-acne hyperpigmentation with vitamin C, but it’s crucial that you don’t let the scars be exposed to sun. Layer on that SPF, wear a sun hat, and I guarantee you will see those scars fade quicker! The more sun they get, the darker (more melanin is produced for protection) and the longer they will take to fade.

  3. Moisturizer:

I live in Michigan and it’s no secret that our weather can be a little crazy and unpredictable during the spring. One day it can get up to 80 degrees, and then you can wake up with frost the next morning. For this reason, I think it’s really important to be able to have a couple moisturizers on hand, if this fluctuation affects your skin. You may find yourself being a little oilier as it warms up, and need a lighter moisturizer some days. You also may find your skin becoming more dehydrated as you spend a little more time outdoors, so it’s important to find a moisturizer that also replenishes the hydration of your skin. Regardless, learning how to read what your skin needs, is the best way to keep it balanced during this unpredictable season.

I personally love using the Weleda skin food moisturizers throughout the year. I use the Skin Food Light during the warmer months, and the Skin Food Original during the colder months.

  4. Chemical Exfoliating:

You probably already know what a BIG fan of chemical exfoliating I am. However, here’s my reminder that if you are chemically exfoliating, even once, it’s vital that you wear your SPF and protect your skin. Recently exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun, so while you normally might think you can avoid a sunburn, you may be surprised how quickly it can happen. Obviously this depends on multiple factors since everyone’s skin is different, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

  5. Masks:

If you don’t currently have a good hydrating mask, the transition into warmer weather is a great time to grab one. My personal favorite the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask because it’s great for dehydrated skin that needs to be soothed. Also, if you tend to be maskne prone, I recommend keeping a clay or charcoal purifying mask on hand to help clean out the pores. I personally love the Pixi Glow Mud Mask for this purpose. Also, don’t forget that multiple masks can be used as spot treatments all over the face if you have combination skin and need different products in different areas.

Those are my helpful reminders as we transition into a new season. Remember, your skin can change on a daily basis during season changes, so do your best to cater to what your skin needs every day. If you ever have questions, don’t hesitate to visit my Contact page and send me an email!

Have a wonderful spring,

Andrea

My Morning Routine

I am without a doubt a morning person. I do my best work in the morning, so I try to structure my routine around this. It’s important that if you’re wanting to create a routine for yourself, that you know your strengths and weaknesses, so that you can set yourself up for success.

Today I’m sharing my morning routine and why I love the way it’s structured. I couldn’t successfully run all of the moving parts of my business without this morning routine. It’s important for me to note that the times are not always the same because I work for myself. My schedule can mean early mornings and late nights, so while the times may differ every day, the overall routine is pretty similar.

Wake up:

I usually wake up between 6:30 and 7:00 most mornings. My body is pretty terrible at sleeping in unless I’ve slept poorly the night before, or was up later than normal. As soon as I get up, I head to make coffee and then set the vibe in my living room to read. I often will tidy up the living room during this time, because it’s usually a little messy from the night day before. Next, I will either light a candle or some incense, and also either turn on the fireplace app on my TV, or turn on some quiet meditation music.

Read:

Usually at this time, my coffee is ready, so I get a nice warm mug and settle into the couch with plenty of blankets. I love starting my day with reading because I get so excited to get up and do something I love. I only spend about 15-30 minutes reading during this time and the amount of time is dependent on how busy the day ahead is.

Planning:

Once I’m done reading, I head to wherever my workspace is for that day (I rotate between the dining room, desk in my office, and couch) to plan my day. I personally like switching this up depending on what kind of work I’m doing that day because it helps keep things feeling inspiring and creative. I like to spend at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour, getting my day mapped out. Monday mornings I spend extra time making a plan for the week (focusing on time sensitive tasks), and making a weekly to do list. I find that when I do this every Monday morning, it helps me feel confident in my abilities to take on the week, and also makes the other mornings so much more efficient. If it’s not Monday, I will then look at that weekly to do list and plan, and decide what needs to get done today.

One big thing I’ve switched to for 2021 that has made the world of a difference is separating the areas of my life into separate planners. I used to try to keep everything in one place and it just got to be too confusing and overwhelming. I don’t like seeing my AFB to do list if I’m done working for the day and focusing on other things in my personal life.

Currently I have four planners! Hear me out! haha I have a personal/ home life planner, AFB business planner, financial planner, and wedding planner. I know that not everyone will need a wedding planner or even a business planner! I’m sharing this more so, so that you can see how crucial it is for me to divide these four sections of my life. I am experiencing a lot of overwhelm in my life because I have so much on my plate, but being able to stay super organized and compartmentalized is truly what is keeping me afloat.

Emails:

Once I have my day planned, I always clear my inbox. Dealing with this task feels very overwhelming right now, due to the amount of emails I receive daily. I try to get a good 30 minutes in right at the start of my day, so that I can cross it off my list and feel accomplished before I do any other work. I personally try to make sure that I can reply to emails within 24-36 hours of receiving them.

Eat breakfast:

After I have my planning and emails done, I’ll usually grab some breakfast (oatmeal or yogurt bowl) and get to work on whatever my day consists of.

My days can look like a combination of any of these things; seeing clients, writing for the blog, editing or filming for IGTV or YouTube, meal prepping for a family I cook meals for, working on my cookbook, recipe testing, thrifting, etc. There really are so many facets of my business, which is why I love it so much!

I personally love that my business gives me a flexible life where I can create differently each day. However, I cannot ignore the fact that when you live a flexible work life, you have to be able to stay organized so that you don’t miss anything. As a self-employed entrepreneur you don’t have a boss to catch errors or remind you to complete certain tasks you missed, so it’s vital that you implement some type of routine into your work days, so you can be successful.

I hope this look into my morning routine has given you some insight into what has helped me start my days off enjoyably!

What are the key aspects of your morning routine? Leave me a comment below and tell me.

Have a great day,

Andrea

I Made a Sephora Purchase

There’s a reason I don’t share a lot of hauls here. I personally don’t like adding into the consumerism of the thousands of people that are already sharing their recent purchases. I don’t want you to ever feel pressured to buy something or think that in order to enjoy makeup, you have to buy the newest products. However, I cannot ignore that many of you come to me for opinions on specific brands, products, techniques, etc. Some of this ‘hauling’ just comes with the territory.

Today I wanted to share some items I’ve recently picked up from Sephora. It happened to coincide with the Sephora VIB spring sale, but I’m definitely not here to say ‘YOU HAVE TO BUY SOMETHING BECAUSE OF THE SALE’, because I couldn’t disagree with that more. In fact, my opinion is quite the opposite.

I prefer to purchase the items I know I need (for my kit) or know I want to try, regardless of the sale price. At the end of the day, I think it’s valuable for you to see items I would purchase full price (meaning they are worth their price tag), or only purchase when I can get a discount. So these are the reasons, I’ve decided to implement a couple hauls a year into the blog. You may find some items to add to your wish list, and it could also spark some ideas of content you’d like to see from me.

Now that we’re done with that disclaimer, let’s get into what I recently got in my two Sephora purchases.

Apple Cider Vinegar Acid Peel - The INKEY List

I have been hearing great things about the INKEY list and knew I wanted to pick something up from the line. When I have plenty of products on hand that are skincare basics, like cleansers, toners, moisturizers, etc, I tend to go for treatment options like masks or peels to test out a brand, since you don’t have to use them every day to try them out. I am really excited to give this one a test because I love a good chemical exfoliant. I keep seeing the INKEY list being compared to The Ordinary, so I’m excited to see if I like another affordable skincare option.

Mercury Retrograde Eyeshadow Palette - Huda Beauty

This eyeshadow palette was not on my To Buy list originally, but when I saw that it went on sale for $20 OFF (at the time I’m writing this it’s still available and on sale so check it out if you’re interested), and I knew I had a gift card to use, I decided to get it! Since it’s no shock that I spend more than the average person on beauty products every year, I try to use gift cards for items that I just want because I often buy so many that I simply need for my kit. This is how I stay excited about makeup! I had been wanting to try a larger Huda Beauty palette for awhile and I loved that this one was equal parts neutrals and fun shades for spring. I will be filming a tutorial with it soon for you so be on the lookout!

Mini Glam Eyeshadow Palette - Natasha Denona & Mini Retro Eyeshadow Palette- Natasha Denona

I’m lumping these two together because I feel the same way about both! I have really been wanting to try the Natasha Denona eyeshadow formula because many claim it is the best formula they have EVER tried. If you’ve looked at her prices, her palettes aren’t cheap, so I figured picking two Mini Palettes would be a great way to get introduced to the brand to see if I want to invest in some larger palettes for my kit. I went with these more neutral / cool toned palettes because I tend to buy warm toned palettes and already have so many I enjoy. There really is plenty of room in my personal and kit collections for new cool toned palettes!

Discovery Eyeshadow Palette - Rare Beauty

Rare Beauty is another brand I have been thinking about trying, but it honestly wasn’t until I saw this palette that I had any serious interest in trying anything soon. I was excited to see this color story, and will definitely be creating some looks with this palette once I receive it. Have you tried anything from Rare Beauty yet that you think I should try? I don’t know why but I tend to start with eyeshadow palettes when I test out a brand. Maybe it’s because I don’t feel like I’m ‘opening’ up a new product.

Radiant Creamy Concealer - NARS

After much hesitation, I finally hopped on the NARS creamy concealer train earlier this year. I ended up falling in love with it but I still don’t think I will ever purchase this one at full price. There’s simply too many great concealers at cheaper price points, for me to spend $30 on this one, so it’s likely one you’ll see in Sephora or Ulta sales or GC purchases.

BeachPlease Lip + Cheek Cream Blush in Rush Hour - Tower 28

Lastly, I knew I had to get my hands on one of these Lip and Cheek Cream Blushes because everyone is talking about them, and I LOVE a good cream face product for spring and summer. I love my peaches this time of year. If I like the formula, I could easily see myself picking up a shade or two for use in my every day collection.

Did you pick anything up in the Sephora sale? Comment below and let me know if you are excited to test out anything new to you, or if there are any tried and true favorites you restocked!

I hope you enjoyed seeing what I picked up and I’ll see you in my next post soon,

Andrea

Recent Favorites and a Fail

I am happy to be back to blogging consistently and figured we’d start things off with a bang and share some recent product favorites and a fail! I am actually surprised how many products I have recently tried and loved because I don’t feel like I’ve tried that many. I guess I’m just having good luck.

Laura Mercier Caviar Volume Panoramic Mascara:

If you’ve been following me for awhile you know that I am generally a drugstore mascara lady! While I do have some high end favorites, I typically do not purchase high end mascara because I think drugstore mascara is just as great. That being said, I received a travel sized version of this Laura Mercier Mascara in a free gift from a purchase at Ulta. I didn’t have high expectations, but I am obsessed with this mascara. It applies so beautifully, separates and lengthens my lashes, AND most importantly, doesn’t get clumpy and spidery when I add multiple coats.

BYBI Bukachiol Booster Facial Treatment:

I picked this booster up over a year ago, to test out as a Retionoid alternative and never ended up opening it until recently! I am obsessed. I currently am not using a retinol oil like I normally do, so I figured it was perfect to add into my routine to test out. I have to say, I have been loving the results. It is much gentler than retinol and a ‘more natural’ alternative to retinols. I simply add a few drops into my night time moisturizer and that’s it!

Native Almond & Shea Butter Strengthening Hair Mask:

I picked up this hair mask on whim on a recent Target trip because I have been needed a hair mask. For some reason, I’ve been having a really difficult time keeping my hair tangle free and I think it’s because it has been drier than normal. I even thought a hair cut would solve the issue, which is did help a little, but ultimately I knew I needed to get a mask. I love Native deodorants so I figured I’d give this one a shot and I noticed a different after just one use. I use it about 2 times a week (when I wash my hair) and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing out. I am happy to have found an affordable solution to this hair problem because I am not super hair savvy!

Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser:

I cannot say enough great things about this cleanser. I love the packaging and pump. I love the scent. I love the texture and consistency for cleansing. I just absolutely love this cleanser. You need so little product, so don’t be put off by the price. I had been wanting to try this one for over and year and when Ulta had a sale, I bit the bullet and got it and I’m so grateful I did. I really think it’s contributing nicely to my overall much more even skin tone. Also hooray for cleaner ingredients!

Essie Expressie Nail Polishes:

These polishes are not new to AFB but I recently brought them back out after not painting my nails for almost a year and I fell in love with them all over again. (Let’s just say getting engaged and having a ring on my finger had something to do with it….haha). I have so many shades and these are all I use for my nails now. I love the staying power most because that is the hardest part for me about nail polish. I have super oily nail beds and gel nails peel off after a couple days no matter what I try (even professional)! I can easily get a week out of this polish with very minimal chipping. Highly recommend!

Fetch App:

I had been hearing about Fetch Rewards for a little while and finally decided to try it out when I saw a friend post her referral link. I am obsessed haha. You simply take pictures of ANY receipts no matter how much you spend (I even do my prescriptions) and you get points that can be redeemed for gift cards. There’s so many to choose from but I am always saving for Amazon gift cards. haha I also have it linked to my Amazon account and email so that when I make purchases there, they will sync with the app! Click the link here if you’d like to sign up and you’ll get a bonus 2,000!!

AND A FAIL…

Maybelline Cheek Heat Gel-Cream Blush:

I had such high hopes for these cream blushes because they reminded me so much of the Cloud Paint from Glossier and Maybelline usually does no wrong for me!! I was really hoping for a more affordable dupe. At the end of the day, they just don’t have enough pigment and are not buildable. At first not having a ton of pigment isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as long as I can build up to the level I want. However, when I tried to start building it up, it got patchy and messed up with foundation underneath and I normally don’t have this issue with cream blushes. Sadly, I’d say pick up the Cloud Paint from Glossier if you’re really wanting this type of product.

What have you been loving recently? Any fails for you? Let me know in a comment below and I’ll see you next time here at Andrea Fontana Beauty!

Sending love,

Andrea

Unsolicited Wedding Advice from a Married Financial Planner

I am so honored to welcome Stephanie A Trexler, CFP®, a previous Andrea Fontana Beauty bride and CEO and Owner of Golden Goose Wealth Planning to the blog! When I got engaged in February, I asked her to share her wealth of knowledge with those of us who are in the planning stages of our weddings! Be sure to check out her business when you are done reading and share this information with anyone you know who is newly engaged! Thank you Steph.

IMG_7227.jpg

Everyone has an opinion when it comes to weddings and it has been said that weddings bring out the crazy in everyone! Here are a few things I wish I would have known before my big day!

∙       Do research before you set a budget- Do not put the cart before the horse! My husband and I picked a random number for a budget because we thought that is what the wedding SHOULD cost, turns out we were off by $10,000. We had not done our research and taken the time to figure out what the kind of wedding we wanted would realistically cost. It would have had a better idea of a realistic cost beforehand; it would have saved many disagreements in the future!

∙       Get organized- Get a physical wedding planner. My sister gave me a custom wedding planner for our engagement gift. It was super helpful having everything in one place. I carried it around with my in my purse and always had my checklists at my fingertips. You will also want to make a spreadsheet and save it in a place where you can easily share it with your fiancé. You will want to make sure you have the following tabs:

o   Guestlist

o   Addresses

o   Budget & Payment Due Dates

o   Day of schedule,

o   Vendor contact information

∙       Go to the wedding expos- They might seem cheesy, but they have tons of great ideas and I made a lot of great contacts at the one I went to. This is also a great opportunity to start getting an idea of how much things cost. At the expo I attended, a caricature artist was setting up her business and she was offering a discount if I booked with her that day. This allowed us to add a nice touch to our wedding that was very affordable.

∙       Think creatively where you register-You might think you really need that waffle maker but consider also registering for things for your home such as tools and yard equipment. After you move into your “big-kid home there are a lot of leaves to rake and driveways to shovel. Those gift cards to Home Depot will come in handy in the future and save you money down the line! Consider using a wedding registry website that allows you to register at multiple stores.

∙       Hire a day of coordinator-Yes, it is an extra expense, but 1000% worth it. Skip the Starbucks, work a side hustle, or pick up some babysitting jobs to make it happen! Having a day of coordinator allowed me to relax with my bridesmaids and drink mimosas. On top of that, she was able to take all the decorations I had bought and made and arrange them even better than I ever could have myself. She has an eye for weddings and her personal touch made all the difference! Leave setting up to the professionals and enjoy your day!

∙       Flower Captain-On the day of your wedding, assign someone you trust to make sure everyone including parents and grandparents gets their boutonnieres and corsages. Give that person a list of who’s supposed to get what. I made the mistake of sending the boutonnieres and corsages to the groom’s room, and not all of the grandparents received theirs on time. This is a great job for a significant other of a groomsman!

∙       Allocate extra time- Weddings always seem to run behind. Set yourself up for success and give yourself an extra half-hour buffer between items on your itinerary. Things come up! Someone might need to stop at the store on the way back from the salon, a traffic jam slowed down the trolley or a groomsman needs a belt! Plan extra time into your day to ensure your ceremony and reception do not get delayed!

∙       Talk about money with your fiancé- Money is one of the top fights between couples. There is a good chance you were raised differently and have different values around money. It is ok to have different opinions, the important thing is to understand the WHY behind why your partner thinks the way they do.

∙       Relax and enjoy- Planning a wedding can be a stressful time, but also the most magical. It all goes by so fast. Soak up every bit of it and enjoy the journey. There are very few times in life where all the attention is on you. Everyone will give you their opinion, but just remember everyone is excited and eager to help. Do not forget to take five minutes for you and your husband alone on your big day!

 Happy Planning!

Books I've Recently Read #9

Wow! I didn’t realize how long it had been since I had shared what I have been recently reading, so this is going to a long one! As usual, if you’d like to purchase through an Amazon link, you can click the title of the book. If you’d prefer to shop through Bookshop.org so you can support both AFB and your local independent bookstores, CLICK THIS LINK HERE, and you can view the entire list of books that are included in this post. Make sure you leave a comment telling me any great reads you’ve found recently. Happy reading!

The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates

I absolutely adored this story. Ta-Nehisi’s writing is magic and I loved the following the journey of Hiram Walker and his mysterious powers. Definitely recommend this one if you want a fictional read that has some magic to it.

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This is one of my favorite reads from 2020. It was written from such an interesting perspective. This BIPOC reading challenge has introduced me to some beautiful love stories from perspectives I never would have known. Add this one to your To Be Read list now.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

One of my other favorites from 2020, this story is so amazing. It involves time travel and a interracial relationship which makes for such an interesting story. I was sucked in the whole time. If you love Outlander books, you have to give this one a read.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

This was my first time reading a book by Yaa Gyasi and she has quickly become an author, who’s books I will always add to my TBR list as she releases them. I loved how this story followed so many multi-generational families. The way it was all connected was amazing and I loved to see how it all came together at the end.

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

This might be the most popular book I read in 2020 and while I sometimes this may leave me feeling underwhelmed, I absolutely loved this book like the rest of the world. haha It is a quick and easy read that tells such an interesting story of twin sisters living separate lives. I personally love stories that follow a life long timeline so this one was really enjoyable to read.

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

Maybe it’s because I haven’t been reading any quick & light romance novels with this BIPOC reading challenge, but I found this one a predictable and quick read. If you like a quick ‘beach’ read, you’d probably really enjoy this one. I thought I would end up wanting to read the rest of the books in the series, but I find myself wanting to tackle so many other books instead. This could very well just be that my taste is changing as I’m getting older, however, so if you like this style of writing, check it out.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

This book is a classic for a reason. It tells the very difficult story of Celie in the deep South. Her story is hard to read at times, but an important one to read as well. I definitely recommend adding it to your TBR list, if you’re someone like me, who is trying to accomplish reading a lot of classics. Let’s be real. They are classics for a reason!

The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare

I know I keep saying that many books were my favorites of 2020, but this story is also at the top. As a woman, I love reading about other women’s perspectives that are so different than my own. This book will make you feel grateful and proud to be a woman. I love how many strong female stories I have read with this BIPOC reading challenge.

Eat a Peach by David Chang

I love David’s show Ugly Delicious, so I was really excited to read this book. It gave me a very different view of him and I really enjoyed it. I personally loved how he shared his perspective on his mental health journey, and the difficulties of being in the restaurant industry.

The Beauty in Breaking by Michele Harper

Another strong female perspective, I personally loved this one because the author Michele is an emergency room physician, telling her story of being a black woman in a predominantly white, male field. The story takes place mostly, post-divorce and while it was a great story to read, it wasn’t necessarily the book I would recommend to read unless this feels like an an important story for you to read.

The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein

Every couple of months I usually like to throw in a book that is meant to teach me some serious history about systemic racism and this one opened my eyes to SO MUCH. I cannot even begin to wrap my head about some of the information I learned about segregation in the U.S. I highly recommend this for everyone to read.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami

I had been hearing a lot about Haruki Murakami and was excited to find this one at my thrift store, so I figured it was a sign to start reading some of his books. I absolutely adored this story. Murakami is such a unique writer. He really describes the scenes so well and helps you create such a great visual, as if you’re inside the story. This is definitely my favorite book my Murakami that I’ve read so far, but I’m excited to read some more this year.

Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir by Padma Lakshmi

I was so excited to read this one because I have loved Top Chef for years and therefore, also loved Padma. However, I cannot say it loud enough. DO NOT waste your time with this book. I have never finished a memoir disliking the person more than I did before the book, but boy was this one awful. I feel like the only purpose of this book was to get back at her famous author ex-husband and say “I CAN WRITE A BOOK TOO”! There was nothing useful to take away from this book, which made me really sad.

Skincare: The Ultimate No-Nonsense Guide by Caroline Hirons

An exception to the BIPOC reading challenge rule, I read this one because it was released and I felt like I needed to check it out for ‘research’ purposes for AFB. haha I love Caroline Hirons. We have very similar opinions and taste when it comes to skincare and I absolutely loved this book. I think it’s perfect for someone who wants a great reference guide to read throughout their lifetime as their skin changes.

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

I decided that 1Q84 was going to be the next book I tackled by Murakami and while I liked it a lot, I loved the previous one I read more. The story was awesome and again, his writing was so magical. He really dreams up these stories that are unlike anything you can ever think of. I just wish this one hadn’t been quite as long. I thought parts dragged out that could have been shortened a little bit, but overall a great adventure and I still highly recommend.

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi

Another fantastic book by Yaa Gyasi. I absolutely loved this story that followed Gifty as she is studying neuroscience at Stanford School of Medicine. You learn the history of why she choose her specific field and the personal stories of her past. It is such a moving story for how short it is. It talks about mental health, addiction, and so many difficult and important topics. As I mentioned earlier, I love Gyasi’s writing and I will continue to read whatever she writes.

Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami

I was really surprised by this story. Yes again, Murakami has created a story unlike any other that transports you inside it. However, I thought that since it was the only Murakami book I had heard of before diving into his works, that it would be my favorite. I still love his other two I have read more. I am definitely going to continue reading the rest of his works, because his writing is amazing.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

This book is magic. I cried and was so emotional while reading it because it truly touched me. The book is a letter written from a son to his mother who cannot read. It explores race, immigration, trauma, addiction; so many painful and intense things. It’s a very important Vietnamese perspective to read and I loved every moment of reading it. Highly recommend.

How We Fight For Our Lives by Saeed Jones

This memoir really touched me as well. As a coming of the age story from Jones’ perspective of growing up black and gay in the South, his story is so important to hear. Because I am white and in love with a man, I will never know the perspective of a BIPOC or gay person, so I find these stories very critical and important to read, as I continue to be an ally for many of the people that I love.

Zikora by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

While this was a short story, I think it definitely could have been written into a longer novel. As someone in my 30’s who is hopefully approaching motherhood in the coming years, I love reading the perspectives of pregnancy and moms from all around the world. Hearing how trauma has affected them and what to choose for yourself and your baby going forward is something I love reading about so I enjoyed this one.

I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai

Mikey bought me this book last year, for our 4th anniversary (we only buy each other books for anniversaries and he has always carried a ‘badass female’ theme throughout his gifts for me). I had always wanted to read this one and the story was even better than I could have imagined. It makes you think about how out of your hands it is that you are born into whatever situation you are born into. We cannot choose where or how we are born, but we are in control of our destinies and it’s important to know what you stand for.

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

This book was completely different than I expected but I really liked the story. It takes place in the south in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina. The story follows a young black girl, who realizes she is pregnant, and her very dysfunctional family as they prepare for a storm unlike anything they every expected.

The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride

I loved the premise of this story and the meaning behind James McBride writing it. I loved hearing the story of how his white Jewish mother came to be in her life. It was really important to James that this story and his mother’s story were shared and I loved reading about it. I really liked how each chapter alternated being told from his and her perspectives so you really got a full view of how she lived her life and raised so many wonderful and successful children, regardless of the difficulties thrown at her.

Have a great day!

Ethical Jewelry Purchases

ethical jewelry purchases ana luisa

I made two jewelry purchases recently that I have to tell you about. When it comes to my outfits, I love using jewelry to modernize or make an outfit look a little more current, especially if the clothing is vintage. I am personally a gold jewelry kind of girl and started purchasing dainty gold pieces that I know I will get A LOT of use out of, and the best part?…are ethically made! Both of the pieces I will be sharing today, have made their way into my everyday, don’t ever take off jewelry group. haha

First up, we have this stunning ring from Ana Luisa. I had first heard about Ana Luisa through some fashion bloggers that I have been following and the more I heard the more I was interested. Conscious, luxury jewelry at an affordable price? Sign me up! Ana Luisa uses recycled materials whenever possible, and they are 100% carbon neutral which is SO COOL! I also love how transparent the website is about their commitment to creating sustainable jewelry.

I purchased the CHLOE ring and she is STUNNING! I love how unique but simple the ring is. I wear it every day, through showering, working out, cooking, etc, and it hasn’t tarnished (they say it won’t). I did use a new customer coupon to get it 10% off. I get many compliments on it and I can’t wait to purchase my next Ana Luisa piece. This is definitely a brand that I will continue to support and buy from because I love the company and what they are doing for sustainability in fashion!

If you’d like $15 your first purchase at Ana Luisa, CLICK THIS LINK!

The second amazing piece of ethical jewelry I recently purchased is this beautiful gold necklace from Better Way Designs, through my friend Bekah’s business. Every item they sell is made by a woman who was saved from sex trafficking. By purchase Items through Bekah, you are supporting the companies in countries all over the world that are employing these women, giving them fair wages, and safe environments to work in! It’s such a great cause. While unfortunately, this specific necklace is no longer available, I am linking her business below so you can look at all of the many beautiful products that are sold through Better Way Designs.

I am hosting a party through Bekah’s business until October 30th, so if you’d like to shop and support this cause through my party, CLICK THIS LINK!

Have you been more mindful of where you are buying your jewelry from? Be sure to comment below your favorite businesses you’ve found that allow you to buy ethically made items!

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea

Gifts for Friends: $30 & Under Intentional Gifting

We’ve all been there. We want to gift our friends something nice without spending an arm and a leg, but want it to be something that they will actually use and enjoy. So today I’ve cultivated a list of items that are perfect for this situation. Below are 10 items that aren’t expensive, but that you wouldn’t necessarily buy yourself regularly, so they are great to receive as a gift. If you have the means within your budget, I would recommend stocking up on some and keeping them on hand for those moments when you want to give someone special a little something.

intentional gifts for friends

Tip: Going the extra mile when wrapping a small gift can help it feel like something really special even if it didn’t cost you much.

Arches Candle from Good & Well Supply Co: I fell in love with this candle when I received it myself as a gift. It is the best smelling candle I’ve ever smelled and one I will continually buy until they stop making it. Mikey and I are both obsessed with it, so it’s a great home scent for everyone. All of this companies products are 100% vegan, 100% ecofriendly, and ethically sourced, which is means you can feel great about gifting it to someone you love.

Hearth & Hand Flour Sack Tea Towel: One of my favorite things to gift a friend, especially as a house warming treat, is a beautiful tea towel.

Better Way Tea in ‘Warm Happy Place’: I love tea and I love receiving new teas that I haven’t tried before, especially ones that are a little more nice an expensive. This one from Better Way Designs (shoutout to my amazing friend Bekah who’s business I’ve linked this tea through) is so delicious. It is unlike any other tea I’ve had before and really gives such a cozy, experience when drinking.

Glo Skin Beauty Suede Matte Lip Crayon in Monogram or Trademark: This is one of my favorite lip products of all time for weddings. I very often put bridesmaids in one of these two shades because they are natural, long wearing, comfortable and look so different and beautiful on every skin tone. At $20 a lipstick, these are a great small gift for someone who loves an everyday lip color because they are great quality and look good on everyone.

Zebra Mildliner Highlighter Pack: A massive pack of beautiful shades of highlighters is not always a justifiable ‘need’ in someone’s budget, but boy do these make writing more enjoyable. If you know someone who uses a handwritten planner, writes a lot of notes, is creative and doodles, or just wants to bring a little joy into their everyday life, these are such a great gift! I love that they are double ended so they have two thicknesses.

Hydroflask Tumbler: Who doesn’t want a travel mug that keeps their hot drinks hot for hours and their cold drinks cold for hours? This gift is amazing for SO many people, and I can’t recommend Hydroflask enough. It’s not secret over here that Mikey and I are obsessed and this one is on my list for Christmas.

Sapo de Solis Handcrafted Soap: This is my favorite local soap company and I love that you can buy them online too! If you’re local to the Lansing area, you can find them in the REO Town Marketplace and often at the Okemos Farmer’s Market. I love how long these last and the scents are amazing. We’ve switched to bar soap in both our shower and our bathroom sink and while I have many soaps on hand that I switch in and out, I always seem to go back to buying from Sapo de Solis when I need soap!

Flowers & Thrifted Vase: This is a really simple and meaningful gift that can bring a nice touch to someone’s home. I find beautiful vases at the thrift store all the time that are great for gifting. You could even go a step further and DIY the vase by painting it, etc and making it a unique gift. Then, stop at your local farmer’s market, flower shop, or grocery store, and pick up some flowers to put in your vase before gifting! I have personally received dried lavender and I highly recommend it because it lasts for months instead of just a couple days!

Endangered Species Chocolate: I love this brand of chocolate. The packaging is beautiful and great for gifting, and I love that there is a special cause behind the company because it makes gifting it, that much more special. Each flavor of chocolate bar is associated with a different endangered species, which you can see on the back of each bar. When you purchase them, 10% of the Net Profits go towards saving that animal. This would be a really great gift idea for someone who loves a specific animal like Elephants, for example.

I hope you enjoy these gift ideas for small and meaningful gifts. If you have any suggestions to add to the list, please leave a comment below and let me know!

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea

Schwinn iC4 Review (Peleton Dupe)

schwinn ic4 peleton dupe spin bike
image0 (8).jpeg

Hello Friends! I’m so excited for this blog post because I have fallen in love with my Schwinn iC4 bike over the past couple of months. Many have asked what my thoughts are on this purchase, so today I will be sharing my review of the bike. I will be talking about. what is included, how much I paid, how it works with the Peleton app, shipping timeline, and so much more.

A quick reminder that I ordered this bike during COVID quarantine, so some things might have changed since, including price. I purchased this bike with my own money and this review is completely 100% my own opinion.

How much does it cost and where did you purchase from?

I purchased my bike in mid May so I was able to snag it for $799 plus tax (Roughly $845). However, I’ve noticed it has gone up $100 (as of when this post was written) and is now $899. However, this does include free shipping. I would still purchase after the price increase. I did not pay for the set up fee because I was happy to set the bike up on my own (which I did and took me under an hour).

I purchased directly from the Schwinn website because it was the most cost effective (free shipping) and I figured it would be best to purchase directly from Schwinn incase I had any future problems (easier to contact one company, rather than multiple). I haven’t had any problems so far, so I can’t really share anything regarding this aspect. I did not pay for the extended warranty.

How long did it take to ship and arrive?

At the time of my purchase it said that the bike would be delivered within 45 days of purchase. I assumed this meant 45 business days, so technically it did arrive on the 44th business day. Roughly, about 9 weeks from purchase to arrival. I did purchase when there was slow downs due to COVID-19 shutdowns, so this might be quicker if you are to order now. There is a link that you receive in an email that allows you to check in on your order and see the status of it.

What is Included?

Along with the bike, I received two 3-lb weights that have holders on the bike, a heart rate monitor that can sync with the bike (I use my Apple watch instead), two water bottle holders on the bike, a flat pad that holds the phone or tablet of your choice (I use my iPhone 11 Pro Max and it works great), clips for if you have spin shoes that clip in, toe cages if you want to use regular tennis shoes, and a digital monitor that’s easy track mileage, speed, RPM, heart rate, etc. It also has a spot where you can plug in a USB charger and charge whatever device you are viewing your class from. You adjust the resistance with the knob which is very easy to use while riding. The handlebars and seat are also easily adjustable.

I already owned spin shoes, so I didn’t need to buy those (I believe the Peleton does include these). While they aren’t required to use the bike, I highly recommend investing in some if you are going to be doing a lot of cycling, because you get a more effective workout with them. The only two bonus things I did purchase for the bike are this black mat to put under the bike, and this padded bike seat to make it a little more comfortable to ride on. Both were inexpensive, easy to wipe down after each ride and I’m loving how they are working for me. You can see both in the photos above.

How does it sync with the Peleton app?

I was worried that it would be difficult to figure out how to sync the bike with the Peleton app, but it was actually very easy. The first time I rode with the bike, I simply pressed the bluetooth button and opened up a Peleton class, clicked a button within the class to open up which devices are synced to Peleton and clicked on the iC4 bike. If you are confused you can easily Google and figure this out. I use my Apple Watch to monitor my heart rate and the bike to monitor my cadence; both of which are displayed on the screen during my Peleton rides.

As far as the cost of Peleton works, it is $13.77 for me a month (including tax) to have unlimited access to both live and prerecorded Peleton workouts. I believe the Peleton membership if you have an actual Peleton bike is around $40 a month, so this is definitely a huge savings in this regard (besides the actual bike being less than half the Peleton price). This includes the cycling classes, but also yoga, strength training, running, and so much more! I absolutely love these classes, the instructors, and that I get access to more than just spinning. I especially love the yoga classes and am excited to try the led runs too. I personally haven’t used the Peleton app with a Peleton device, so I can’t share how different it is to use the Peleton app without them. I have found that I have never felt like I’ve lacked anything by not having an actual Peleton device though. I know that with an actual Peleton it calculates your output based on the resistance and cadence you are spinning at, which is used in the leaderboard to compete against others. To my knowledge that is the only difference from not having a Peleton device, but please comment below if that is wrong.

You don’t have to use the Peleton app to use this bike, it syncs with many other apps, or you can ride at your own pace, etc, which I have done as well and love too.

What was your spinning experience prior to purchasing?

I have been an avid cycler since I was in high school. I used to take weekly spin classes at my local gym and in college took some as well. Since graduating, I have often used the spin bikes at my gym to do more of self directed classes since I have taken so many led by in person instructors.

This past winter, I started getting back into spinning 3-4 times a week on days that I wasn’t running. I told myself that if I spun consistently at the gym for 6 months and saved the money for it, I would buy myself the Schwinn iC4 for my 30th birthday in May 2020. As with any large purchase, it’s very important to evaluate realistically how much you would use the item. If you have never cycled before, I would definitely recommend taking some classes to make sure you enjoy it, because that is the most important thing in getting the most use out of it long term. I was planning on purchasing the bike before COVID and quarantine happened, however I am SO happy to have this amazing piece of equipment in my home now, because I don’t have to leave home and was able to cancel my gym membership.

Do you regret anything and would you recommend?

I do not regret ANYTHING regarding this bike. I would purchase it again and recommend it to any of my friends who enjoy cycling and are considering a long term purchase.

Random things to note:

  • The bike does require being plugged in to track your workout so you need to make sure you can place it close to an outlet.

  • This is VERY important if you are going to buy the Schwinn iC4 bike. The resistance levels DO NOT match up to the Peleton numbers the teachers use in class (I’m not sure if this is for other cycling apps as well). The iC4 is much stronger of a resistance at a lower number. I didn’t know this for a few classes and finally googled it because I couldn’t believe how heavy the Peleton instructors were wanting the resistance. haha You can google it but basically here are the correct conversions —> iC4/Peleton = 5=25, 9=30, 17=35, 25=40, 33=45, 49=50.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post! If you have any additional questions regarding my Schwinn iC4 or Peleton experience, please feel free to comment, email or DM me with more questions! Hopefully I covered everything you could need to know.

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea

Home Decor Thrift Flips

Fruit Basket (Macrame)

This project took a little while for the idea to come to fruition. I was thrifting one day and came across a simple, wire hanging plant basket that was green. It was a great price and something just told me I shouldn’t pass it up. It sat around for a little while in my studio until I was thinking about how I desperately needed a bigger fruit basket that wouldn’t take up a lot of counter space. I had just seen a video on macrame and decided why not give it a shot! I ordered this set of wooden beads and loops plus a roll of macrame cord from Amazon. While I waited for those to arrive in the mail, I used this flat black spray paint to cover the bright green color. Once it was dried, I cut 16 very long cords of macrame cord, searched how to make a square knot, and made up my own knotting pattern, periodically adding wooden beads. I attached the wooden loops together to make the basket longer and attached it to a hook I already had in my kitchen. The thing I love about this project is that there are a ton of ways you could make this!

Terra Cotta Candles (Spray Paint and candle making)

I always find short, wide, glass, circular vases at the thrift store for super cheap. One day I picked two up for $1 each and decided it was time to try making my own candles. Instead of trying to master candle making, I simply went to the clearance section of Homegoods and purchased 2 candles about the same size as my vases (so that it would fill nicely) that I liked the smell of. The design of the candle doesn’t matter since you will be ‘rehoming’ the wax. The day before repotting my candles, I used this AMAZING terra cotta spray paint and added about 3 thin layers of spray paint on each vase. It’s important to note that before you spray paint anything glossy or glass, it’s important to make sure you clean it off really well with soap or alcohol. If you do thick of a layer it will start clumping or dripping because it is a textured spray paint. You want to make sure everything is covered well. If you are going for a true terra cotta dupe you’ll want to make sure that you do a good amount of coats. As you can see below, I thought it was covered, but it was still a bit transparent when it was dry. I don’t mind this for a candle however because some of the light shines through. After I was done painting, I let them dry overnight.

The next day, I got a big soup pot and filled it about half way with water (making sure it was a couple inches below the top of my candles), let the water come to an almost boil, and put the candles in. I let them melt for about 45 minutes, checking on them every 10 minutes or so. While they were melting, I hot glued the new wicks I purchased onto the bottom of each vessel. Depending on the size of your new vessel, you might have to do multiple (as you can see I did three). Once they are melted you can take them out (I pulled the wicks out to make them easier to pour) and gently using potholders (the candles will be hot), I poured them into the newly wicked candle vases. Once the wax was in, I used some chopsticks to wrap the excess candle wicks around so they would stay standing up as the candle wax hardened.

Coasters (spray paint)

These were easy and left me amazed as always, at how easily a coat of spray paint can change a thrifted item. Using the same flat black spray paint, I sprayed both sides of these wooden coasters and now I have beautiful matte black coasters that match my living room decor so well.

diy thrifted coasters home decor

Lamp (Painted base)

Another quick flat matte spray paint save, I found this lamp and actually hated the shade when the base was it’s original, glossy brick red color. I figured I’d spray paint it and get a new shade, but I found that once I sprayed it, I actually liked the shade with the base. When looking for items that are easy to spray paint, try your best to look at textures and shape and NOT the color!

Terra Cotta Hurricane Candle Holder

My last spray paint thrift flip, I had this huge clear glass hurricane glass vase laying around for years, not knowing what to use it for. I decided to try the Terra Cotta spray paint, fill it with coffee beans, and use it as a way to turn a candle into a statement piece for fall. I love that when the candle warms, it makes the coffee beans smell stronger. I’m excited to use this piece from season to season, changing up what’s inside for different holidays!
