July Favorites

I'm back with favorites and I'm excited to share the ones I have this month. I polled you guys over on Instagram and while a lot of you like the video format from last month, most of you prefer the written format, so I'll probably return to this format and film a YouTube favorites video every so often.

This month is short but sweet, but I hope you enjoy it.

The only skincare product that is new to me recently is this Green Apple Brightening Gel Cleanser by Juice Beauty.  When I went through my skincare product detoxification, my cleanser rated so high on Think Dirty. This one is a ZERO and I love it. I feel like I've hit the jackpot. It's loaded with antioxidants which is really important in protecting your skin. The brightening is due to the citric (lemon) and malic (apple) acids! I love how this has left my skin feeling cleansed well (coconut oils) and brightened. I highly recommend it if you are someone who struggles with an uneven skin tone.

Every spring/summer I seem to revisit my lipstick collection and pick out lipsticks that I forgot about. This one from Maybelline (Shade 945: "Stormy Sahara" is one I realized that I've never talked about but is a classic shade from them. If you're a light/medium skin tone and looking for a good rosy/nude check this one out.

This next favorite is also a lip product but on the higher end. Back in the spring when I did a Sephora and Ulta haul I mentioned this NARS Power Matte Lip Pigment in 'Walk This Way'. I am so amazed by the formula of these. They feel like water going on, but are packed with pigment and go on so easily. They dry down to being virtually undetectable and wear so nicely on the lips. I love this shade too, because it's just enough of a pop of color to be noticeable but isn't obnoxious and bright.

My last beauty favorite is a nail polish that has been the only thing on my toes for the past year. The color looks especially great in the summer. I'm not sure if you can still get it anywhere besides this website I found, but the Essie Metallics Collections in 'Nothing Else Metals" is the best shade. It's a silver/lavender shade that looks so great on toes. It matches everything and really looks great with a tan in the summer.

A food favorite for the month is one that I tried a long time ago. I can't remember where I tried this brand for the first time, but when I went on Amazon to buy them I ended up getting this variety pack that was AMAZING! These bars are free of the top allergies; peanut, dairy, gluten, tree nut, soy, egg, fish, shellfish, & sesame. While I try to stay away from processed snacks, these are relatively clean and I like them every once in a while especially now that I'm gluten free. The Chocolate Chip crispy squares and Strawberry granola minis were definitely my two favorites, but I really enjoyed all the flavors.

So those are my favorites from the month of July! I told you they were going to be short and sweet! What have you been loving? Leave a comment below and let me know.

Have a great August,

Andrea

Recent Empties #2

I've found that you guys really like these empties posts because it's nice to see products I didn't like as well. It's been awhile since I did my last one, so I wanted to share with you the products I've used up in the last few months. I think this post will be equally as helpful because I have some products I won't be repurchasing because of the ingredients they contain and that I am finding cleaner alternatives. I've divided them up into categories so it's a little more helpful, and I've included products that I use up in my kit since that might be interesting for you as well! Let's get started:

Makeup Empties:

Most of these products were from my kit which will be helpful for you if you're looking for products I trust and love. First up we have two bottles of the Ulta Beauty Brush & Sponge Cleanser. I go through this stuff like water because it's such a great brush cleanser. It's really effective and you don't need much product. It also dries really quickly, so when I'm doing clients back to back, it's easy to sanitize and clean my brushes fast and move onto my next client. If you don't deep clean your brushes as often as you should, I highly recommend getting a spot cleaner like this to wash them frequently (every other day) in between deep cleansing. I will continue to keep repurchasing this spot cleanser until I find one that I like more or is comparable but more cost effective.

This next product is also from my kit and I have a love/hate relationship with it. MAC Cosmetics Fix + is a cult favorite and I keep it in my kit for only one reason; to wet my brush for metallic shadows/more color payoff. I do not like it as setting spray for the whole face because I hate the way the container sprays. I'm picky when it comes to spraying a face of makeup that I've just put so much work and love into. I also find that the bottle tends to leak when I'm transporting it from job to job, so after 2 or 3 bottles completely emptying in my kit, I've committed to only buying this little 1 oz bottle of MAC Fix + from now on, so I don't waste money if it leaks again. I will continue to buy it because it is my favorite for really getting a shimmery/metallic shadow to lay beautifully on the eye and stay well.

Benefit Porefessional Face Primer is my favorite silicone based primer to keep in my kit for almost all of my clients. I love how it smooths out the texture of a client's skin and will always have it in my kit. I've tried other brands' versions and nothing compares to this one for me. Plus most of my clients always say "this smells so good!" and it's nice for clients to have enjoyable situations like this throughout the makeup process. Remember if you are a makeup artist, the experience of doing someone's makeup is just as important as the end result.

This last makeup empty is a personal one, as I am always trying out mascaras from the drugstore. I have had so many people talk about Covergirl Clump Crusher and decided to try this one out. It's the Covergirl Clump Crushers Extensions Mascara in 'Very Black'. Apparently it's supposed to be like the original clump crusher formula but with buildable fiber extensions in it? I don't think it was anything special and if I remmeber correctly, I bought it by accident when wanting to try the original instead. Mental note: Read fine print better Andrea.

Skincare Empties:

These two kind of go together because they were my two favorite makeup removers before I went clean with my skincare. I loved this solid Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter because it isn't liquid which makes it easier to travel with. It also seemed to last forever. The Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water is also great for removing eye and face makeup with a cotton round. If you aren't concerned with clean skincare than I'd recommend them for you, but unfortunately you won't seem in my routine anymore. (In case you are wondering what I have switched to, keep an eye out for my current skincare routine post coming later this week!)

This toner is a repeat and thankfully is clean enough to stay with me through the clean skincare process! It has a few ingredients that register as a 3 but most are 1's which makes this an overall 3 or under product (my goal). There has to be at least a 50% chance that if you are reading this I've either gotten you addicted to this toner or you've heard me talk about it. The Dermadoctor Ain't Misbehavin' Healthy Toner with Glycolic & Lactic Acid is the perfect toner for people who need glycolic and lactic acid in their routine on a daily basis (i.e. many of you especially those who struggle with texture issues, uneven skin tone, breakouts, clogged pores. etc...). It's worth the splurge because it lasts over 6 months and I love that it comes in a glass bottle. I think it's made an appearance in at least 3 empties posts over the years, so you can bet I will continue to purchase it.

I used up a pack of the CosRX Acne Pimple Master Patches and this things are my SAVIORS. I will always keep them on hand because I pop one on clean and unmoisturized skin over my blemish at night and in the morning it is significantly reduced. It works best if the blemish has come to a head already, but I am always excited to see the oil and impurities on the sticker when I remove it in the morning. It makes me feel like a science experiment and I'm weird like that. If you struggle with acne ever PLEASE do yourself a favor and click on the link and snatch some of these up.

I got this sample of the Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum and I couldn't even finish it because of the smell. I thought I could tolerate most smells if I knew the product was helping my skin but I just couldn't get over this one. I included it in this because I've heard great things about this serum but I wanted to recommend that you go into Sephora and ask for a sample to see if you can tolerate before you purchase it.

Next up we have some sheet masks that I used up and this first one was a gift, and thankfully they still sell them on Amazon! The Secret Nature Firming Blueberry Sheet Masks are awesome. I'm happy I received a whole pack of 5 of these because after using the first one, I couldn't believe how plumped and hydrated my skin looked. My fine lines were so minimized and some even gone. It was unreal. While they contain ingredients like fragrance, that I try to stay away from, I will definitely be using up the pack. Again this is a product that I definitely recommend if you aren't as concerned with clean skincare. The other mask I used is from I Dew Care and I bought it in the Let's Get Sheetfaced kit of 14 sheet masks. Unfortunately it is no longer available, but I did like that there were many options in this kit. I definitely recommend getting a kit of different varieties of sheet masks to keep on hand so you always have something for whatever your skin is currently dealing with.

Other Empties:

This category is for hair and body. So I have an issue with wasting products. I cannot just through products out because I no longer want to use them. I have to figure out a way to use them and this first product was no exception. I haven't bought a Victoria Secret or Bath & Body Works body product in ages, I think this one was a gift, because the quality of ingredients is just simply bad. I had this Amber Romance Victoria's Secret Body Wash and instead used about a tablespoon with my bathes to give a little bit of bubbles. This did make it last forever, but at least it's gone and I don't have to feel bad about wasting products. I'm not even going to link it because I do not recommend buying your body products from either of these places.

These next two hair products, the Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo & Conditioner for Fine/Normal Hair were my favorites before I switched to a cleaner option. I went through a few bottles of them and really did love them. They are great quality if you don't necessarily want clean hair care products and made my hair feel more voluminous and healthy (For reference, I have very flat and fine hair but a lot of it).

The last product I want to share is something I've never talked about on AFB but it has to do with periods so if that bothers you here's your warning. While going clean and toxin free, I swapped out my tampons for organic cotton ones. This was actually one of the first changes I made, probably about 8 or 9 months ago! Through a recommendation of a friend (thanks Mercedes!) I went with This is L and I really do love their organic tampons. I signed up for the subscription on their website which I've linked above and received 20 tampons once a month (10 regular & 10 super) for $7.95 (including shipping). I like that with every purchase they donate to products women in need in high impact areas. So not only are you making a healthier conscious choice for yourself, but you're doing something good for other women at the same time. I will always support companies who have this business model! While I would buy L tampons again, I paused my subscription because I couldn't use them fast enough. Apparently I don't need 20 every month and they were getting backed up in my bathroom. I have also noticed the Cora tampons and decided that once I used up my This is L ones, I would give those a shot. Cora also donates products to women in need and they are organic cotton. I feel like Cora's website is more specific in how your purchase helps those in countries all over the world (including the US) which I really like. I will let you guys know how I like the Cora Tampons when I get to try them. Both companies have subscription options which is really nice so you never have to do a midnight tampon run again (Hello, we've all been there!) I like that Cora is sold on Grove Collaborative which is the online membership service that I use to purchase my natural cleaning products.

This was definitely a longer post than normal but I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the products I've used up recently. It allows me to give you an honest opinion of the product after using it entirely. I hope you enjoyed and shout out to you if you made it to the end of this post! Comment below if you've tried anything I mentioned today!

Have a beautiful week,

Andrea

10 Summer Skin Care Tips

We've had a season change since I've shared skincare tips so here you go!

1. WEAR YOUR SPF. I just can't write a summer skin care post without mentioning this. So let's do it first to get it over and done with. Just do it. No tan is worth skin cancer. You are just as beautiful with your paler winter skin, as you are in the summer. PROTECT yourself.

2. Apply a Vitamin C serum under your SPF to boost the effects of your SPF...because if you can protect yourself more, why wouldn't you friends?

3. Keep hydrating sheet masks in the fridge for days when you haven't drank as much water, have been out in the sun or salt water, or are just simply overheated. The extra cooling sensation is everything. You'll thank me later!

4. Make sure your skin is getting enough oil. You may notice that in the warmer months your skin gets more oily. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT stop using moisturizer thinking this will fix the problem. You can balance oilier skin, with oil. I know it might seem crazy but stay with me. If you stop moisturizing you can cause your skin to overproduce oil to compensate and then you will become even more oily. Making sure that you have enough oil (mainly at night if you don't want to feel greasy during the day) is vital to helping your skin slow down on it's oil production and feel more balanced. I personally use a facial oil at night and this helps my skin stay balanced.

5. If you suffer from post inflammatory hyper pigmentation (i.e. dark spots from old, healed blemishes) make sure you are covering them with SPF. They will eventually fade, but it will take much longer if you let them get sun and darken. I was very religious about this when I was getting rid of my scars and they all went away much quicker.

6. If you're like me, you like to take your exercise into the outdoors in the summer months. Make sure you are washing your face ASAP after every sweat sesh. If you can't make it to a sink, throw some cleansing wipes into your bag to clean and remove any bacteria.

7. Take advantage of your local farmer's market and buy fresh fruits and veggies. Did you really think I was going to give summer tips without mentioning food? All of the in season fruits and veggies have loads of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that can boost and protect the health of your skin. If you're not following me on Instagram yet, head over there and check it out (@andreafontanabeauty) and follow along every Tuesday as I share "#BeautyFoodTuesdays to teach you about how specific foods can help your skin.

8. Stick to your routine. I know that with weddings, parties, barbecues and summer patios, it can be easy to get lazy with your skincare routine, but STICK WITH IT. When are skin is looking great, it's easy to get lazy, but I promise you it will be worth it in the long run to be consistent.

9. Carry a hat in your car or purse at all times. You never know when you could get stuck in the sun for longer than expected and it's always great to have some extra shade on hand.

10. Invest in a SPF setting spray to keep in your purse. Having makeup on is not an excuse for not reapplying SPF. Also even if your foundation has SPF in it, it does not protect you all day. I recommend Coola's Sunscreen Makeup Setting Spray for reapplication throughout your day that won't mess up your makeup, but help it last longer!

Happy summer time friends! Let me know if you utilized any of these tips or if you have any of your own!

Have a great day,

Andrea

May Must Haves

So May was absolutely nuts. Forgive me as I acknowledge the fact that I was not very good at blogging during it. I think I worked every day but two, which included 5 weddings, many trials, and lots of other fun makeup things. I also celebrated my 28th birthday which is nuts but was absolutely amazing! Thank you for the support and kindness you all share with my throughout the year, but especially on my birthday.

Today I'm sharing my favorites for May because I actually tried a lot of new things and have been loving them so many of them.

First off I recently decided to switch to a natural toothpaste, which I had put off for so long because I had heard so many terrible things about how bad they tasted. But I was visiting a friend who lives near Trader Joe's and decided to give theirs a shot. The All Natural Anticavity Peppermint Toothpaste with Baking Soda and Flouride  (I've linked a 2 pack on Amazon for those of you who can't get to a Trader Joe's easily) is honestly not as bad as I was expecting. Yes you can tell it's a natural toothpaste because it doesn't have that sweet, strong flavor of the bad stuff but I'm totally used to it now and it doesn't bother me. I feel like my teeth are just as clean as before. The only thing that I don't get from it is that super minty fresh feeling that you get from the bad stuff, but honestly I think that's fine since it's better for me.

Next up we have probably my favorite find of the month that is courtesy of my amazing friend Suzie who gave me this product for my birthday! I've talked about this before on here, but I do not let the sun damage my face in the summer. I always have SPF 55 on it, hats, sunglasses, towels, haha whatever I can find to protect myself. This obviously means that I end up with a face that is pretty pale compared to my body; that usually gets some color despite my constant SPF because it's just exposed more. Insert the Coola Suncare Organic Sunless Tan Anti-Aging Face Serum. I put one pump on every night after my skincare routine and wake up sunkissed every morning. It's not super dark (although I'm guessing that's because I only use a little, if I try to apply more and get darker I'll let you know). The fact that it's a beautiful olive and natural looking fake tan is just the beginning. It's also an anti-aging serum loaded with Argan Oil, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, & plant stem cells to leave you feeling hydrated and glowing! It also smells delicious and you can add it to your moisturizer if you want. When Suzie gave it to me she said it's favorites worthy and she was right!

I have done videos before showing how I love to mix a liquid highlighter in with my foundation to give me a dewier skin look and have always used the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter before to achieve this. However, it's quite expensive and I wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to a whole other bottle. When I was shopping with friends in Ulta in April, we discovered the Maybelline Master Strobing Liquid Illuminating Highlighter in Light/Iridescent and I thought it looked pretty close to the Becca shade in Opal. Fast forward to purchasing and trying it out and it's a pretty close dupe.  If you compare them side by side the Becca one looks a little more finely milled, but once mixed in with foundation and applied to the face I cannot tell a difference. I am so happy I found an amazing dupe that is less than a quarter of the price! They do have other shades as well if you don't want the blush rosey color that is like Opal.

I received the gorgeous Tarte Aspyn Ovard Eye & Cheek Palette for my birthday from another amazing friend (I know I'm the luckiest girl to have all of these sweet and amazing friends) and luckily with all of my weddings and makeup I've been doing I've had plenty of time to test it out. I love the whole thing, my only critique is that the really glitterly/shimmery shades are a little tricky to apply. I tried using a wet brush with MAC Fix + on it to apply them and that helps, but can also be tricky in a chunky way if that makes sense. The mattes are so beautiful and smooth and easy to use, the blush is an amazing shade for summer, and the highlighter is also beautiful. Overall I love it the shades and think it'll be a great palette to take with me when I want to travel.

I have saved the best for last! If you have been reading my posts recently, you've noticed that I love Glossier. I have been trying more and more out from them and when they came out with a Mascara I KNEW I had to try it. Lash Slick is if not the best, one of the best mascaras I have EVER tried. I know that is a bold statement but I love it. I saw it described somewhere as giving you lash extension like lashes and I think that is such a great description. It doesn't look like clumpy, thick fake mascara lashes, it really looks soft and natural which I love. The wand is awesome and separates your lashes so well too. If you want a bolder look you could always layer a second and thicker mascara over it which is usually what I do if want a bolder look for night time. The best part for me though is that it truly lasts all day on my lashes. No smudging, no flaking, no changes; it still looks great at the end of the day. Here is my link for you to get 10% off your first purchase from Glossier. I highly recommend checking Lash Slick out if you haven't yet!

What were your favorites in the month of May? Comment below and let me know! I love hearing about the new things you try!

Have a beautiful week,

Andrea

April Obsessions

I cannot believe we are already at the end of another month. I feel like I was sharing my March Must Haves with you last week, but here we are! April was an interesting month for me. It was jam packed as I'm gearing up for bridal season and doing trials and prep for all of the weddings I have booked this year. Regardless, I managed to try more products this month than normal, so I'm here to share the things I was obsessing over this month.

Weleda Skin Food is a moisturizer that I've known about for years but never remembered to pick up. It has seriously been on my wish list for 2 years but I always manage to get something else instead. It wasn't until I started doing my skincare cleanout that I realized that it was a 0 (aka really clean) and I saw one of my favorite makeup artists to follow on Instagram (@katiejanehughes) use it in a live makeup tutorial underneath her makeup for glow. Once these both happened, I knew I finally needed it and I am kind of pissed at myself for living this long without it. First off, the smell is amazing and citrus-y and clean smelling. It is a very thick cream designed for really dry and even chapped areas. At night I like to add it just in the areas where I have dryness or fine lines. If I use it like Katie Jane does, I put it on my cheekbones under foundation to give me more glow and it works so well. Check out my latest YouTube video here when I show you how I use it before applying my makeup.

Thriftbooks.com has become my newest obsession! One of my favorite things to do is visit a used bookstore and peruse the shelves to see what they hold. One day I discovered Thriftbooks.com and it's like going to a used bookstore and finding exactly the book you wanted. I cannot believe how many different books they have. You can choose different levels of wear for different prices. I've gotten some great $20+ books for under $4. It's insane! I love to buy my cookbooks here because they are so much cheaper. Plus I feel good about buying used instead of new. My favorite thing is the wish list option because anytime I see a book I want, I add it too my wish list so I don't forget. If it's not in stock, I get emails letting me know when it is which is awesome! If you use this code here you can get 15% off your first order (P.S. I do not make any money off of these links)!

I bought a Loreal Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara a few months ago because I had been hearing such great things about it but it never quite made it into my makeup bag to use until the last few weeks. I have to say I was surprised how much I like this one. It's supposed to be the dupe for Too Faced's Better Than Sex Mascara which I do not like, so I didn't have high hopes for Lash Paradise. I have to say I love it as much as the original Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black. The brush is nice and gives both length and volume similar to Voluminous. I'm happy to say it's not flaky like I find the Better Than Sex mascara to be.

I know I've only had the Fenty Beauty Matchstix Matte Skinstick in Amber for 10 days, BUT I'M OBSESSED. If you missed me freaking out over it in my most recent YouTube video, click here to watch it. This cream contour stick is so blendable, but not only is it easy to use, it is the perfect shade for contouring. It creates the best shadow on the face and I love using it. I can tell you this is a product I will be using so much in the summer for a dewy, bronzed glow. I cannot wait.

I am a member of Grove Collaborative and am obsessed with it. It's a company that specializes in more natural products for cleaning, body care, skincare, and more for your home! I like it because if I don't need anything that month I can delay my shipment as long as I need. Last month they gave me a free lip balm in my order and I am obsessed with it! It's not too greasy, but moisturizes my lips super well. I love the oval shape to it, because I can apply to both my top and bottom lips at the same time. The best part is that it is super clean! No toxic ingredients and has a minty refreshing scent. I love it! Click here for the Mint & Argan Lip Balm.  If you want to sign up for Grove, use this link to get a free 5-piece gift set!

So there we have my favorites for April! Short but sweet. I can guarantee I will have many more favorites in May because I am testing out some awesome products right now. Leave a comment below and let me know what you loved this month!

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea

10 Random Skincare Tips

You guys really seem to like when I compile lists of tips or recommendations so I thought I'd compile a little list of 10 tips relating to skincare. Look for one on makeup coming next!

1. Stand away from the shower head. If you don't already face away from it, get into the habit of letting the water hit your backside, not your front side because hot water hitting your face increases dryness.

2. Multi-Mask. Rarely does our entire face need the exact same treatments. You can be breaking out in one area, but super dry another! Don't be afraid to use different masks on different areas to achieve what all of your skin needs.

3. Frozen spoons. If you deal with puffy under eyes due to allergies (hello spring) keep 2 metal spoons at all times in your freezer. Then when you wake up with swollen eyes, you can use the curve of the spoon to fit nicely into the curve of your eye socket to de-puff! This is one of my faves.

4. KEEP THESE ON HAND ALWAYS. I've talked about these before in a favorites video, but you never know when you're going to wake up with a blemish. Once it starts coming to a head, pop of these babies on it before bed (and before you put your moisturizer on so it sticks better) and it will help draw out the impurities and infection while you are sleeping. I cannot tell you enough how quickly these help me heal big blemishes.

5. Press don't pull. When it comes to applying your products, like serums & moisturizer, don't rub it into your skin. Instead, warm up the product in your fingers and press it into your skin all over. This allows you to apply your products without tugging on your skin and doing damage over time.

6. Pay attention to expiration times and write it on your product. Beauty products don't usually have an exact expiration date, but they often have a 12M, 24M, etc, logo on the bottom or back that shows in how many months you should stop using the product. It's too hard to remember dates for every product, so I recommend getting a sharpie and either dating when you opened it, or when it's time to pitch it.

7. Before you take product recommendations from someone, ask what their skin type is. It is pointless to buy your best friend's FAVORITE new moisturizer if they have dry skin and you are really oily. It's important to know what their skin is like before buying skincare or facial makeup products that work for them. Unfortunately not everything works for everyone so be sure that the product is ideal for your skin type first!

8. Give your skin a break. If you wear makeup on a regular basis, give your skin a break by going makeup free one or two days a week! I cannot tell you how nice it will feel to let your skin breathe. While makeup is fun, it's important to embrace the natural beauty of your naked face.

9. Keep a variety of products on hand. While it's good to have a set routine for your skin, it's important to know and accept that your skin won't need the same thing every single day. Having products (like different moisturizers for different levels of hydration for example) on hand, will allow you to always be ready to treat your skin with what it needs that day.

10. Invest in good quality. I cannot recommend this enough. It's probably something you've heard a million times but I cannot stress enough how important it is to spend your money first on your skincare, before makeup. Quality products usually last longer as well because you use less product. However, not all products have a justified price tag, so be sure to ask a professional (like me!) before purchasing if a product seems really expensive.

I hope you enjoyed this fun little list of tips! If you have any good skincare tips be sure to comment below and leave your favorites! Tips are always fun to learn.

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea

I have a really great body scrub currently in my bathroom that I love and while reading the ingredients I realized I could very easily make a similar type of body scrub with ingredients from my pantry. This got me to thinking that I might as well make it for you guys and share with you how I made it.

The ingredients you'll need are few and you can edit this recipe as much as you want and create your own unique scrub.

You will need:
- Coffee grounds (I used organic french vanilla from TJ's because I love how they smell)
- Coconut oil (Again I used organic unrefined so it still has the coconut smell)
- Brown sugar (you could use granulated white sugar but I like how soft brown sugar is)
- Essential Oils (I used peppermint to make my scrub SMELL LIKE A THIN MINT!)
- Some sort of container (I used a mason jar with a screw top lid)

Now the exact amounts you use will be completely dependent on how big your container is and the consistency that you like. I personally like my scrubs to be wet but really crumbly so that I get a good exfoliation (REMEMBER use these scrubs on wet skin only and NEVER on your face).

In my jar I mixed 5 tablespoons of coffee grounds with 5 tablespoons of brown sugar. I mashed them together to make sure that they were evenly mixed and then added 1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil. Next, I added about 10 drops of peppermint essential oil and when I smelled it I WAS IN HEAVEN. Thin mint in ajar. I cannot wait to smear this all over my body tomorrow when I shower.

If you are looking for a chemical free body scrub, this is a great way to make your own! The coffee is stimulating due to the caffeine and will help with circulation. The brown sugar will exfoliate all of your dead winter skin cells off, and the coconut oil is great for moisturizing your skin!

If you make a scrub and use different oils or measurements be sure to leave a comment below and let me know what concoctions you create!! I honestly don't think I'll ever buy body scrubs again!

Skincare Tips for the Active Woman

As I was going about my shower routine the other day after hitting the gym, I realized that there are very specific things I do either before, during or after my workouts for the sake of keeping my skin clear and healthy. I figured I'd share them all with you as a quick reminder of how to keep things clean when you're an active woman. There are tips for for both face and body. Enjoy!

1. Wash your face immediately after your workout. If you sweat at all during a workout you should wash your face as soon as you are done, even if you don't have makeup on. I keep a pack of cleansing wipes in my gym bag (these are a great option) to wipe my face down quickly when I'm done because I personally never workout with makeup on. If you do wear makeup, I would definitely suggest cleansing your face with an actual cleanser afterwards. It's really important to not let the sweat sit on the surface of your skin for too long after you're done.

2. Wash your body with a Charcoal body soap. I love to use a charcoal body soap to cleanse after the gym to lessen the likelihood of back or chest breakouts. Sometimes I can't take a shower right after the gym because I have other things to do, and doing this allows me to still get a deep clean and prevent any breakouts. This one by "Yes To" is a great option.

3. Change your towel every day. If you shower at your gym after your workout, make sure you swap out for a clean towel every single day. More than likely, your towel gets put in a gym bag and doesn't get proper ventilation to dry quickly. If this is the case, it's really easy for bacteria to harbor and grow. I recommend tossing it in the hamper and getting a new one every time so that you avoid touching your face or body with it. I know that may seem excessive, but if you are prone to acne it's little changes like this that limit your exposure to acne causing bacteria which can lessen the likelihoods of breakouts.

4. Stop touching your face. I know this seems obvious but think about how many things you touch that carry germs when you're at the gym. Touching your face only spreads the bacteria and it's always good to have another reminder not to touch your face. I do it without even realizing it sometimes so don't worry, I need this one too. Try bringing a fresh towel to the gym every time you go to wipe the sweat, instead of using your hands!

5. Use headbands. Headbands are a great way to keep sweaty hair off your face during a workout so definitely get some if you have bangs or baby hairs. I prefer to get ones that are able to be washed with my clothes so that I can clean them easily.

Let me know what your clean skin tips are for the gym but leaving a comment below!

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea

March Must Haves

It's the time of the month where I share everything I've been obsessing over. I get so excited to write these posts for you because you guys seem to love them! As usual, if there is an Amazon link I trust I will share it and it will be an Amazon Affiliate link (feel free to scroll to the bottom to read my disclosure on that). If it's not an Amazon link then it is not an affiliate link. Now let's get to the good stuff! This month will be short, but sweet.

Let's start with the best healthy cookie recipe you will ever make. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing that I can eat them all in 2 days, but let's be glass half full people and say it's a good thing. Laura in the Kitchen is my go to when I need a good recipe because she has so many and they never disappoint. I have shown these a few times on my Instastories and was waiting to share them with you in a favorites post. So go make them NOW. I would be shocked if someone could tell they were healthier without knowing before hand.

Dr. Jart Cicapair CC TreatmentThis has become an everyday must have for me. I have seen Michele1218 RAVE about this product for about a year and finally bit the bullet and decided to try it. I am obsessed. It is a physical SPF, gives me moisture and has pigment to color correct your skin. It doesn't look like makeup at all but makes your skin look so much smoother, healthier, and even toned. It's my last step everyday when I'm not wearing makeup and need SPF. Don't let the green color scare you, it quickly color corrects the redness in your skin, while being completely undetectable.

Herbivore Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask: If you read my post about Curate + Co (I'll link it here in case you didn't) I was gifted this amazing mask by the wonderful owner Christina. This one has also found its way into a permanent position in my skincare routine because it's amazing. It's completely clean and effective for keeping my skin smooth and blemish free. I love how the Blue Tansy has Azulene which reduces inflammation, so if I have breakouts it calms them while getting rid of them at the same time.  If you can, please use the link in the title to purchase it and support Curate + Co, an amazing small business that I love! If you are only a die-hard Amazon shopper, here is the link for that as well.

Pacifica Rose Flower Hydro Mist : Yes, this one made it two months in a row. I debated not mentioning it but the reality is that I am still obsessed and I used it almost every day in March. It feels so good on the skin and I cannot get enough of it. I love how refreshed I feel every time I spray my face with it and it smells so good. If you're looking for a good refresher try this one out!

Lancome Matte Shaker in Beige Vintage (270): I have been loving this lip product, mainly because it is so light (literally feels like water on your lips) and gives the right flush of color. The staying power isn't great, but that doesn't really bother me. I'm excited to try more shades.

As you guys know, I recently cleaned out my skincare products and the best part is that all of the skincare listed above is clean and passes my chemical-free test! My every day makeup clean out is still on the horizon so remember that when I recommend any makeup from now on.

What were your favorites this month? Did you discover anything good? Leave me a comment below and let me know!

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea

Disclosure: Amazon links are Amazon Affiliate links meaning that I make a commission off the purchase of the product through my link. I would never recommend a product that I didn't love and all opinions are my own. I am thankful for you choosing to purchase through my links, as it helps me create more content for Andrea Fontana Beauty.

How do I love Glossier? Let me count the ways.

Did I already spoil this post with the title?

Facetune_30-03-2018-13-15-12.JPG

I have known about Glossier for years, but had never purchased anything due to the abundance of products I already had. Once I quit my job and trying new things became fun again, I knew that Glossier was next on my list to try. The main reason I love Glossier is that their skincare and makeup ideas resonate closely with mine; healthy and effective skincare that gives you a glowing look, and makeup products that simply accentuate this natural and healthy vibe. All of their products are easy to use and many are multi-use which allows the modern woman to easily incorporate them into her fast paced and busy life.

With the release of Solution, a exfoliating toner, I knew the time had come for me to place my first order. We all know how much I love a good exfoliating toner.  I didn't want to go too crazy, so I only purchased 3 things with my first order. If you are new to my blog or videos, these three items are very reflective of my favorite types of products. I ordered Boy Brow (a tinted brow gel) in Black, Haloscope (a stick highlighter) in Moonstone, and Solution (the exfoliating toner).

I wanted to use the products for a little while, especially the toner in order to give you honest feedback and I'm obsessed with all three. If you want to see how I use the two makeup products be sure to click this link and watch my Everyday Glowing Skin Tutorial Video because I show how I use both of those items in it.

Boy Brow: I freaking love brows. That is no secret. So I am extremely picky when it comes to new brow products. Boy Brow is naturally what I think of when I think of Glossier because they are known for this product, so this was an obvious place for me to start when deciding what to order. I got the shade black because I knew it would be very cool-toned (I cannot stand a warm brow with my coloring)  and it is a perfect match for me. As you know I have a history with Benefit Cosmetics and used to live for Gimme Brow for it's ease and ability to thicken the appearance of brows quickly. I can honestly say I love Boy Brow more (Plus it's cheaper...just sayin' haha). I feel like it never makes my brows look wet and my hairs still look very much like brow hairs, just thicker and darker. For me it's extremely undetectable and not opaque, so it gives me a very natural and full brow appearance. If you do not have very full brows, I would still recommend this product for you, I would just use a pencil afterwards to fill in the areas that you are lacking a little hair.

Haloscope: I heard about this product from Katie Hughes, a makeup artist, and she said that she loved it, specifically in the shade Moonstone, because it made the skin look wet and I cannot agree with her more. It's not sparkly, it's a sheen that gives your skin such a healthy and dewy look. I love to swirl my middle and ring fingers together around it in and dab it on my cheekbones and it's just heaven. Some people apply it straight from the stick, but I feel like this moves my makeup around too much and requires me to need to blend it out more.

Solution: I was nervous to swap out my old exfoliating toner (The Dermadoctor Ain't Misbehavin' one) for this one, because I was nervous for breakouts to come back, but I can say that I feel like the transition was an easy one. I knew my old toner wasn't clean and that I would have to get rid of it (click here to read my post on cleaning out the chemicals in my skincare). Solution has Glycolic and Lactic acids in it (the AHA's and the stars of my old toner) but also has salicylic acid (BHA) and Gluconolactone (PHA), which I think is key for my acne staying at bay; I like the combo of different acids working together. I love the packaging because it keeps things sanitary, but my only critique is that I feel like one pump is not enough toner for my face, but 2 pumps is too many. Am I the only one who feels this way? Comment below if you agree or disagree. Solution is also much cheaper than my old toner, so this change is great! If you have regular breakouts, dry skin, little white heads from oil buildup, or other texture issues, I highly recommend this product.

Have you tried anything from Glossier before? If you want 10% off your first order be sure to click this link! Up next on my list to try are the new Lidstar Eye Glows, the Stretch Concealer, the Cloud Paint Cheek Colors and the Skin Tint! I will be sure to keep you guys updated as I try more stuff from this brand because so far, I'm LOVING it!

Have a beautiful weekend,

Andrea

The Launch of The Beauty Bar at Curate + Co.

Imagine a cozy little space that from the moment you walk in and see what's inside you can't help but smile. Every step and turn you make, you notice another thing you want and you find yourself saying "awww look" 1,000 times in a row. That's Curate + Co. in Kalamazoo, MI.

I was lucky enough to have Christina, the owner, reach out to me and ask me to be a part of a very special project to launch The Beauty Bar, a collection of expertly curated face and body products that would make any woman's conscience scream, YOU NEED THIS! Christina and her husband Marco, wanted to create a launch video and needed a makeup artist to create the three looks showcasing the products, which is where I came in.

Not only did we all come together to create an amazing video (Click here to head to my Instagram to watch all 3 looks!), but everyone involved was so talented and fun to work with. I loved this project.

Now I want to share some of the products I used in the shoot and some that I took home with me and have been testing out.

French Girl Organics Facial Scrub in Rose du Jardin: I am not normally a physical exfoliation girl but I had to get this one when I saw all the ways that you could use it! You can use it as a regular scrub by mixing it with water or toner, mixing it into your cleanser, or even using it as a mask, as it has pink and white clay in it! There are also plant antioxidants that brighten and soothe your skin.

Rituel de Fille Rare Light Luminizers: I used the three shades of these luminizers in the video shoot and I fell in love. You can use them in so many different ways; brow bone, inner corner of your eyes, cupids bow, cheek bones, collar bones, etc. I have been way more into liquid highlighters recently and these definitely make the cut.

Rituel de Fille Inner Glow Creme Pigment: I am normally not a huge cream blush fan, but these really changed my opinion. They were so easy to blend and had great color payoff. Even if you've never tried a cream blush before I highly recommend picking one of these shades up because they give such a healthy looking flush to the skin; plus they are great to keep in your purse for on the go moments when you need both lipstick and blush!

Herbivore Botanicals Blue Tansy Mask: To say that I'm obsessed with this mask would be an understatement. I can honestly say I will always keep this as a part of my regular skincare routine. This mask contains fruit enzymes and willow bark (natural source of salicylic acid) to gently exfoliate your skin but also clarify it. I highly recommend it for those who deal with acne, oiliness or texture. I love how Herbivore recommends you do it every night for 3-4 nights in a row to get started and then use it 1-2 times per week for upkeep. I noticed huge improvements with my skin within the first use and it just got better with each use. I never felt too dry or sensitive afterwards. I love the smell of it (it's surprisingly very candy like) and you don't need much product to get a successful treatment. I like to rub a dime sized amount between my fingers and then apply to my face for a thin layer. It will tingle for a little bit, but that is totally normal!

Sassy Lips Make The Moment Lipsticks: If you watched my last video (CLICK HERE TO WATCH) I mentioned that my favorite lip look is currently the 'popsicle lips' where you look like your lips are stained from just eating a popsicle. If you love this look too, I highly recommend these awesome pH changing lipsticks because they look different on everyone depending on the pH of your lips. They give the perfect amount of stain and can be layered to create a brighter and more intense look. We used one in the 'Fresh' look created in the video and I loved it. I cannot wait to get my hands on my own. I think they will be perfect for fresh summer makeup looks!

There are many other great products and pieces at Curate + Co to check out. If you like home decor, kids clothing/ toys, greeting cards, and more, or even just want a little inspiration, I highly recommend adding 'Visit Curate + Co. ASAP', to your To-Do List next time you visit Kalamazoo. One of the things I like most is that they host a lot of workshops to learn how to create new things or pick up a new hobby! If you can't make it to the store you can always visit their website at www.Curate-Chicago.com

Thank you again to Curate + Co for asking me to be a part of this awesome project!

Have a beautiful day,

Andrea
